‘Tis the season for some funny family drama, as Lil Rel Howery and Tabitha Brown get ready to have an “Unexpected Christmas.”
Howery and Brown executive produce and star in the holiday comedy, which is set for theatrical release on Nov. 7.
“Christmas movies are literally the gift that keeps on giving,” said Brown in a statement. “’Unexpected Christmas’ is relatable and hilarious, but will truly be a gift for all families this holiday season!” Added Howery: “This movie and this cast is so special and will be the holiday movie everyone will be talking about.”
The film’s ensemble cast also features Anna Maria Horsford, DomiNque Perry, Reagan Gomez-Preston, Terrence Terrell, Trell Woodberry, Howie Bell, Cece Friday, Ricco Ross and Koryn Hawthorne.
Written by Cassandra Mann and directed by Michael Vaughn Hernandez, “Unexpected Christmas” follows the Scott family as they gather for the holidays, a reunion that quickly (and hilariously) devolves into chaos. Fresh off a recent breakup, Melissa’s (Perry) return home takes an unexpected twist when her ex-boyfriend Richard (Howery) arrives at the family gathering arm in arm with her estranged stepsister Kerry (Gomez-Preston).
“Marissa tries to play it cool and invites a surprise guest of her own who has everyone talking, all while Kerry is cooking up a scheme that could ruin the whole celebration,” the official synopsis reads. “Add in a few romantic mix-ups, old rivalries, plenty of family secrets, and everyone is in for an unforgettable holiday. With love, laughter and a little bit of chaos around every corner, this Christmas might just bring the Scotts closer together — or blow the roof off the house!”
“Unexpected Christmas” is produced by 3 Diamonds Entertainment’s Trell Woodberry and Phil Thornton, as well as Perri Camper. Howery and Brown serve as executive producers along with Norman Gyamfi.
“We’re proud to bring ‘Unexpected Christmas’ to audiences this November — a true labor of love from our amazing cast and crew,” said Thornton and Woodberry, who produced and will co-distribute the film with Eammon Films. “As a Black-owned company, we’re honored to share a story that celebrates our voices, artistry, and impact on the global stage.”
