Telecommunications giant, Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL), has staged its third Econet Expo, unveiling innovative digital solutions aimed at driving national development and improving everyday life for Basotho citizens. The expo, which opened on at Maseru Mall, is Lesotho’s biggest digital festival and will run until tomorrow under the theme “Digital First: Shaping Lesotho’s Tomorrow.”
The event reaffirms Econet’s ambition to position itself not just as a telecom operator but as the leading enabler of digital transformation in Lesotho.
Speaking at the official launch, ETL General Manager for Sales and Services, Mr. Lebohang Ramaisa, said this year’s expo features a wide array of solutions tailored for enterprises, schools, households, and individuals. From advanced corporate services to home entertainment systems and education technology for both higher institutions and primary schools, the expo seeks to demonstrate how digital innovation can touch every aspect of life.
Mr. Ramaisa stressed that the third edition of the expo comes at a decisive moment for Lesotho, as the country is witnessing a rapid shift towards a digital economy. He noted that this shift is being driven both by government policy and the demands of citizens and businesses.
“We are witnessing a rapid shift towards a digital economy, a movement driven by both government policy and the growing needs of our citizens and businesses,” he said.
He pointed to the government’s National Digital Transformation Strategy, which has introduced foundational tools such as cybersecurity bills, data management policies, Artificial Intelligence (AI) guidelines, and Intellectual Property Knowledge (IPK) frameworks. According to him, these policies reflect a shared national vision for a digital future.
“Today, we are not just launching an event; we are reaffirming our commitment to a connected and prosperous future for Lesotho. This expo is a physical manifestation of our journey from a traditional telecommunications company to a complete digital services provider,” he added.
For more than two decades, Econet has played a leading role in connecting Basotho, but Mr. Ramaisa explained that the company has evolved alongside customer needs. “We are no longer just about voice calls and SMS; we are about empowering lives with digital solutions. This is a monumental achievement that positions Lesotho as a leader in connectivity, not only on the continent of Africa but also globally,” he said.
He further explained that consumers can now expect much faster internet speeds, with the minimum now at 70Mbps compared to the older 10Mbps and 20Mbps packages. Econet’s 5G-ready network, he noted, will provide lower latency than satellite services, powering future technologies across the country.
The expo also seeks to engage directly with customers and partners through interactive displays. According to Mr. Ramaisa, the goal is to create a platform where entrepreneurs, students, families, and tech enthusiasts can physically experience the possibilities of digital technology.
“As we embrace the digital revolution, we are also mindful of the challenges it presents, particularly the threat of cyberattacks. So we have brought in cybersecurity partners such as Fortinet and Hitachi to demonstrate how Econet can help you navigate these challenging times,” he explained.
ETL Business Solutions Manager, Mr. Tlohang Palama, highlighted that Econet has built a broad digital ecosystem that goes beyond connectivity. He pointed to key products like EcoCash and EcoSure, which have played a huge role in financial inclusion and social security for many Basotho.
He also mentioned Wi-Fi Plus, a fixed internet solution designed for homes, offices, and mobile usage. The product allows customers to share connectivity by activating up to five eSIMs—one for themselves and four for family members or business associates.
“Our solutions are more than just products. They are tools for progress. They are transforming businesses by helping small and medium enterprises (SMMEs) streamline operations, improve productivity, and reach new markets,” Mr. Palama said.
He noted that Econet’s services also benefit individuals, providing access to essential services, entertainment, and global information. In the fintech sector alone, Econet’s EcoCash and merchant agent networks have created over 10,000 jobs in Lesotho.
Analysts say the third Econet Expo not only cements Econet’s dominance in Lesotho’s telecoms sector but also signals how telecom companies across Africa are transitioning into full digital service providers. By linking connectivity with fintech, education, entertainment, and cybersecurity, Econet is showing how telecom firms can directly support national digital transformation goals.
As the expo continues at Maseru Mall, expectations are high that Basotho consumers, businesses, and policymakers will take away valuable insights into the possibilities of a truly digital-first economy.
