The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has congratulated Mrs. Maryamu Idris on her appointment as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
The appointment, which was confirmed in a statement shared by NNPC on its official X handle on Wednesday, was described as a significant milestone for Nigeria in strengthening its representation at OPEC, a global body that shapes oil production and pricing policies across member states.
The statement read: “We congratulate Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, on her appointment as the National Representative for Nigeria at the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).”
The corporation also highlighted her achievements and long-standing contributions to the oil and gas industry.
Idris, who currently serves as the Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, has extensive experience in the petroleum sector. She previously led Pricing and Valuation within NNPC’s Crude Oil Marketing Division, served as a Technical Advisor to Nigeria’s OPEC Delegation, and contributed to Nigeria’s involvement with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). She also played a role in sector reforms during her time with the Bureau of Public Enterprises and the Oil and Gas Implementation Committee (OGIC).
She holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree in Economics from the University of Abuja and a Master of Science (M.Sc) in Energy Economics from the University of Dundee, Scotland.
As Nigeria’s OPEC National Representative, Idris will act as the country’s principal technical liaison within the organisation. She has also been appointed as a member of OPEC’s Economic Commission Board (ECB), where she will participate in technical discussions and policy recommendations.
According to NNPC, her role will involve close collaboration with key stakeholders such as the OPEC Governor, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, ensuring that Nigeria’s energy policies align with OPEC’s broader objectives.
The corporation added that Idris’s appointment is expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s position on sensitive issues such as production quotas, pricing stability, and sustainable energy strategies at a time when global oil markets face volatility.
Her appointment also comes amid recent reassurances by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, that Nigeria remains committed to OPEC’s rules and will not exceed its allocated crude oil production quota, even as the country seeks adjustments to reflect its full capacity.
By combining her experience at both the national and international levels, Idris is expected to play a key role in shaping Nigeria’s oil sector strategy while contributing to OPEC’s collective decisions that impact the global energy market.
