Netflix has filled out the cast of its limited series The Age of Innocence, adding 14 actors to the adaptation of Edith Wharton’s classic novel.
Three of new additions — Fiona Glascott, Belinda Bromilow and Emma Shipp — will be series regulars, joining the previously cast Camila Morrone, Kristine Froseth, Ben Radcliffe and Margo Martindale. Hayley Mills, Ryan Morgan, Will Tudor, John Light, Steven Pacey, Kel Matsena, Lucia Balordi, Elly Roberts, Jack Cutmore-Scott, Anna Madeley and Michael Cochrane are all billed as supporting players.
Netflix placed a series order for The Age of Innocence in April, with Emma Frost (The White Queen) serving as showrunner and adapting Wharton’s novel about a love triangle between the wealthy Newland Archer (Radcliffe, Masters of the Air), his fiancée May Welland (Froseth, The Buccaneers) and her cousin, Ellen Olenska (Morrone, Daisy Jones & The Six). Emmy winner Martindale plays May and Ellen’s grandmother, Mrs. Manson-Mingott.
The show’s logline reads in part, “The Age of Innocence explores themes of freedom, duty, identity and love in all its forms. This fresh take is true to Wharton’s novel but will speak to a new generation as we traverse the ballrooms and bedrooms of these young people, asking the question what is love — and what is lust? And should we ultimately be driven by our heads or by our hearts?”
Glascott (HBO Max’s Julia) will play Augusta Welland, May’s loving and very traditional mother. Bromilow (The Great) is set to play Adeline Archer, Newland’s mother, a widow who prefers solitude. Shipp (Rivals) plays Janey Archer, Newland’s sister, who is herself looking to marry.
Mills will play Louisa Van Der Luyden, Adeline’s cousin. Morgan plays Lawrence Lefferts and Tudor plays Sillerton Jackson, friends of Newland’s. Light will play Lovell Mignott, May and Ellen’s uncle. Pacey will play Judge John Welland, May’s father and Adeline’s husband. Matsena will play Ned Winsett, a friend of Newland’s and magazine editor. Balordi plays Nastasia, Ellen’s ladies’ maid. Roberts plays Edith Mignott, May and Ellen’s cousin. Cutmore-Scott will pay Julius Beaufort, a banker interested in Ellen. Madeley will play Aunt Medora, Ellen’s former guardian. Cochrane plays Henry Van Der Luyden, Adeline’s cousin.
Frost is writing every episode of the series in addition to serving as showrunner. She executive produces with Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Tracey Cook of Chernin Entertainment, Shannon Murphy, Pavlina Hatoupis and Shannon Murphy (Dying for Sex), who is directing the first three episodes. Lisa Bruhlmann (Killing Eve) and Natalia Leite (The Handmaid’s Tale) are also set to direct.
