“X-Men ’97” has been renewed for Season 3, it was announced at New York Comic Con on Sunday. Season 2 will release in summer 2026.
A trailer shown in the room to Comic Con attendees showed the return of the evil mutant Apocalypse and the X-Men characters scattered across time. The heroes, like Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Jubilee, Nightcrawler and more, must find their way back to the 1990s after being lost in the past and future.
Season 1 debuted on Disney+ on March 20, 2024, and finished its 10-episode first season on May 15. It continued the storylines from the fan-favorite “X-Men: The Animated Series” from the 1990s, and the revival received positive reviews from critics and fans alike.
The new Disney+ series picked up right when “X-Men: The Animated Series” ended back in 1997. The super-powered X-Men are still hated and feared by many normal humans, and the team is reeling from the apparent death of their beloved Prof. Charles Xavier. The X-Men’s top foe Magneto has taken control of the team from Charles’ final will, but it’s soon revealed that the telepath is alive and living amongst the Shi’ar alien empire. Charles eventually returns to Earth to help his X-Men defeat Bastion, an all-powerful human and robot Sentinel hybrid, but the team is flung through time in the process.
In the final moments of Season 1, it’s revealed that Cyclops and Jean Grey are stuck in the future 3960 A.D; Rogue, Beast, Nightcrawler, Charles and Magneto are stranded in ancient Egypt in 3000 B.C. where they meet a young, soon-to-be-supervillain Apocalypse. There’s also a hint that Gambit, who had sacrificed himself during a battle with Sentinels, may still be alive. Plus, Magneto ripped out all the adamantium from Wolverine’s body in the penultimate episode, so there’s lots to explore in Season 2.
Original head writer Beau DeMayo had been fired by Marvel shortly before the Season 1 premiere and after he had finished work on Season 2. “What If?” scribe Matthew Chauncey will write Season 3. The voice cast includes Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler.
